Jennifer Lawrence explains pixie cut: My hair was 'fried'

Don't worry, "Hunger Games" fans: Katniss Everdeen will still have her signature dark braid in upcoming movies even though star Jennifer Lawrence has chopped off her own locks in favor of a pixie cut.

During a Yahoo! "Fireside Chat" on Thursday, the star put minds at ease when asked about her new 'do, which she debuted on Facebook Wednesday.

"This isn't how Katniss is going to look in the next movies," the actress assured. "I'm actually wearing a wig (in the films)."

Filming has started for the third movie in the series, "Mockingjay." The second part of the film series, "Catching Fire," opens on Nov. 22.

As for why the actress made such a drastic change to her hair length, Lawrence explained that she had cut it a little shorter earlier, but "it grew to that awkward, gross length, and I kept putting it back in a bun. And I was like, 'I don't want to do this!' So I just cut it off. ... It couldn't get any uglier!"

That's because, as she explained in a Google+ hangout on Wednesday, her long locks had been "fried from being dyed too much."

Lawrence isn't the only actress to go for a shorter 'do in recent weeks. Jennifer Aniston chopped off her famous locks in favor of a bob after a keratin treatment damaged her hair. Also opting for much shorter tresses are former "Baywatch" star Pamela Anderson, Kristin Chenoweth and Jennifer Hudson.

Whether they’re for getting into a character or just a new look, stars' extreme haircuts tend to make headlines. Check out some of the most stunningly transformative 'dos celebrities have sported over the years.
