A scheduled visit from “American Idol’s” Randy Jackson turned into an unexpected jam session on Tuesday’s “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon” when ousted “Idol” James Durbin joined the show.

Fallon invited Jackson to take the stage so that the two of them, along with house band The Roots, could perform their own rendition of Journey’s “Any Way You Want It.” Just before getting started, the host surprised the crowd by introducing Durbin.

The trio rocked and the audience raved.

During the interview that took place before the big performance, Jackson admitted that he never saw Durbin’s “Idol” exit coming.

“I thought this kid would go all the way, but I don’t know,” he said. “Sometimes the public forgets to vote. You always have to vote to keep your favorites in the competition. To get your favorites to win anything, you’ve always got to remember to vote. Every vote counts!”

As for the remaining “Idol” hopefuls, the talent show judge spread out his praise evenly.

“I love all of these kids,” he insisted. “I mean, Haley (Reinhart’s) so brilliantly talented. Scotty (McCreery’s) brilliantly talented and so is Lauren (Alaina).”
