Harry Hamlin 'got so much hate mail' for Don Draper slam on 'Mad Men'

Harry Hamlin's "Mad Men" character, Jim Cutler, was simply telling it like it is when he looked Don Draper in the eye and said, "You're just a bully and a drunk." But it seems Jon Hamm's antihero is a beloved bully, and some fans of the show didn't approve of the all-too-apt slam."Aw, man! I got so much hate mail for that," Hamlin revealed during a Thursday visit to TODAY. "People love Don Draper.

Harry Hamlin's "Mad Men" character, Jim Cutler, was simply telling it like it is when he looked Don Draper in the eye and said, "You're just a bully and a drunk." But it seems Jon Hamm's antihero is a beloved bully, and some fans of the show didn't approve of the all-too-apt slam.

"Aw, man! I got so much hate mail for that," Hamlin revealed during a Thursday visit to TODAY. "People love Don Draper. … I told the truth — the guy is a drunk and a bully — but people do not like that."

Of course, the criticism of Hamlin is a bit misplaced, since the he's just following a script.

"Some people don't get that, but that's OK," he said.

As for whether or not he'll give fans a good reason to pen anymore hate mail when the show returns for the second half of season seven — the last episodes of the series — Hamlin remained tight-lipped.

"If I told you anything about what goes on next season, before I got outside the door, I'd be killed," he joked.

But there's one thing he was willing to say.

"I think people are always surprised by this show, (but) no one will be disappointed," Hamlin promised.

The finale run of "Mad Men" kicks off in the spring of 2015.
