"Grimm's" Nick Burkhardt (David Giuntoli) has defeated scary beasts such as Wendigos, Mauvais Dentes, Hexenbiests and much more on NBC's fairy-tale crime drama, but things are about to get tougher for the monster-fighting detective in season three.

Namely, bigger and badder troubles, teased star Bitsie Tulloch, who plays Nick's girlfriend, Juliette Silverton.

"As Nick has grown stronger and more capable (as a Grimm), he's more acutely aware of everything. He's coming into it just like a tougher version of Nick. Totally like the latest Apple operating system, Nick 2.0!" she explained to TODAY.

"But on the other hand, there's also been enough time for the seven royal families and other Wesen (humans who morph into mythological creatures) to figure out who he is and where he is, so they're all kind of stronger too," Tulloch said. "So you're dealing with creatures that are more of a danger, a bigger concern."

The actress added that there are "tons of new monsters" this year, and there's a particularly terrible one.

"There's a really good monster in the Christmas episode," she revealed. "Santa Claus is probably one of the scariest Wesen we've had! ... It's really just a twisted take on Christmas. This is not like, 'Grimm's' nice, fun, light version of Christmas. It's really dark and sinister, and I think the fans are gonna love it."

Though the monsters this season might be worse than ever before, Nick's got a new secret weapon: Juliette herself. Tulloch explained that now that the veterinarian is in the know about mythical creatures inhabiting the world, she's going to be able to use her medical knowledge to help her love solve his supernatural mysteries.

"This is the first time in two seasons that ... he can actually come home from work and we can discuss cases," Tulloch said. "It's been really fun to be able to own it and for the two of them to be able to go through this together on the same path as opposed to being on diverging paths or having to hide things from each other."

Juliette may be lending her expertise to Nick, but don't expect her to give up her career for her man. Fans will actually get to see the vet working on pets again, but that led to a rather unexpected to surprise for the actress.

"I actually tweeted some pictures ... me operating on a cat, but it was a real dead cat that had been stuffed!" she said. "I was like, 'Guys! Give me a stuffed animal!' ... It was totally creepy. They're really going for it. There was a dead stuffed cat! I was like, 'Uuugh!'"

But she's getting used to the morbid and the realistically bloody creations.

"I'll be walking along the hallway back to my trailer, and there will be a dead body there, lying there, that they're about to cart in there to do another scene," Tulloch said. "Every time it makes my heart jump, like, '(Gasp!) Oh, OK. I'm on 'Grimm.' It's just 'Grimm.' "

"Grimm" kicks off season three at 9 p.m. Friday on NBC.
