It was a big night for “Modern Family” and “Mad Men” at the 63rdAnnual Primetime Emmy Awards — the shows snagged top honors for a comedy and drama respectively — just as it  was a big night for both shows a year earlier at the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards when they did the exact same thing.

And those were far from the only awards do-overs for the night. Add that to the usual mix of musical routines, scripted banter and stiff hosting (Sorry, otherwise awesome Jane Lynch!) and — yawn — television’s top accolades seemed destined to be a snoozefest. Thank goodness for a couple of well-placed upsets.

Who could have possibly predicted Kyle Chandler, of the now sadly defunct “Friday Night Lights,” beating out talent-heavy contenders such as Jon Hamm, Hugh Laurie, Michael C. Hall and Steve Buscemi, for the lead actor in a drama series? (Not me.) And Barry Pepper’s win for lead actor in a miniseries was just as much of a shock, partly because Pepper's Robert F. Kennedy beat out Greg Kinnear's JFK and partly because that meant some Academy members must have actually tuned into the widely-panned “Kennedys” miniseries.

But for sheer fun factor, the best shocker of the night had to be Melissa McCarthy. Sure, her work on “Mike & Molly” might not have made her the best laugh-inducing lady in a TV comedy last season (see the robbed Amy Poehler, or even Tina Fey, for that), but at least her pageant-worthy crowning moment broke up the blahs nicely.
