'Back to the Future' star fears her home is lost to Sandy

"Back to the Future" star Lea Thompson may have been at the "Dancing With the Stars" taping on Monday, but her mind was on Superstorm Sandy. "Back to the Future" star Lea Thompson may have been at the "Dancing With the Stars" taping on Monday, but her mind was on Superstorm Sandy. The actress, who currently stars on ABC Family's "Switched at Birth," had every reason to believe her home on Fire Island, N.Y., had been ravaged – and likely lost. The storm's surge had destroyed homes and property in the beach community Monday.

Surprisingly, Thompson was not only calm about the situation, she also appeared her usual, exuberant self. How come?

“Well, because it’s hilarious,” she told TODAY. “My husband just paid off a 30-year mortgage in September. I thought this would be just perfect if the house is completely gone!”

The good news is that the actress, who played Marty McFly’s mother and his girlfriend in the "Back to the Future" franchise, has flood insurance. The bad news? “You really don’t get that much,” Thompson noted. “It’s sad. I’m mourning my little house on Fire Island.”

Thompson, who was at "DWTS" to cheer on "Switched at Birth" co-star Gilles Marini, is hoping to make a trip back East next week to survey the damage. “I just know that it was completely flooded. It’s just surreal. My kids grew up there.”

Despite the potential personal loss, the actress is keeping things in perspective.

“The good news is that no one is there and there have been such great storm warnings," she said. "They evacuated everyone from the island. I hope everyone is safe.”
