He went on to compare the band to the infamous sign-language interpreter who apparently made random gestures instead of using actual signs at Nelson Mandela's memorial service in December.

Red Hot Chili Peppers bass player Flea admitted to the unplugged performance Tuesday in a lengthy statement posted on the band's website. He said the NFL left the band no room for argument regarding playing with pre-recorded music and that singer Anthony Kiedis did sing live. He also said the band intentionally did not plug in its guitars, although doing so might have eliminated the angry fan reaction, saying, "we thought it better to not pretend."

Before Flea issued his statement, Rose wrote a lengthy essay mocking the band's performance, suggesting that the musician had a microchip installed in his rear end (though that's not the descriptor Rose used) that "picked up the frequencies of his bass and transmitted them to his amplifier."
