"Frozen" fans don't have to "Let it Go" just yet. The May season finale of ABC's fairy-tale drama "Once Upon a Time" revealed that Queen Elsa is joining the TV show, and she won't be roaming her ice castle alone. Reports on Monday reveal that Elsa's sister, Anna, and Anna's pal, Kristoff, are also joining the cast.
Elsa was seen in the show's finale, recognizable by her icy powers, blue-and-white gown and cape, and blonde braids, although the role in that brief scene was played by a stand-in.
The show is just now casting for the actual roles, E! reports, and plans to keep the characters in the live-action show close to their animated movie counterparts in spirit.
In the movie, Broadway vet Idina Menzel played Elsa, Kristen Bell played Anna, and Jonathan Groff played Kristoff. TV Line, which broke the story, reports that show bosses "laughed and offered a 'no comment' at the prospect of a CGI (snowman) Olaf showing up."
Back in April, "Once Upon a Time" producers Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz told E! that their writers' room was "basically a 'Frozen' appreciation room" and that they'd be "completely honored" if the movie stars wanted to recreate their roles. And Bell told E! that taking on the part would be "unbelievable" and reiterated her love for playing spunky Princess Anna.
Don't expect a simple rerun of the blockbuster Disney film, no matter who's cast, Horowitz told E! when the Elsa news first broke.
"We’re not going to redo the movie, because we just don’t feel like it’s in anyone’s interest for us to redo it," he said. "But what we are going to do, we’re not ready to tell you. But what we can say is we’re very aware of what we think makes this character from 'Frozen' so special and we want to honor that and make sure that what we do is in the universe of (what) everyone fell in love with this past year.”
