One of Wednesday night’s “American Idol” rebels, James Durbin, ignored pop appeal, as well as the advice of resident mentor Jimmy Iovine, in favor of a head-banging, heavy metal production.

Durbin impressed the judges with his performance of Sammy Hagar’s “Heavy Metal” alongside ex-Ozzy Osbourne guitarist and Black Label Society founder Zakk Wylde.

“Who would have ever thought that on ‘American Idol’ we would have metal, like, heavy metal — pure heavy metal? That was crazy,” Jennifer Lopez said of Durbin’s effort. “But at the end of the day, we could have a country idol; we could have a pop idol; we could have a heavy metal idol. Whatever. It’s America’s choice!”

Of course, last week, America’s choice left J.Lo and Co. stunned as the panel’s previous favorite, Pia Toscano, was sent packing.

Durbin will soon learn if America is ready for a metal man or not. The “American Idol” results show airs tonight at 8 p.m. ET on Fox.
