"Transcendence" isn't looking too transcendent. The Johnny Depp movie opens Friday, and its critical rating at Rotten Tomatoes is struggling to stay above 10 percent. (But 97 percent of the audience wants to see it, so Depp's got that going for him.)
In the new movie, (spoiler alert), Johnny Depp plays Dr. Will Caster, an artificial-intelligence researcher who, on the verge of death, has his mind uploaded into a computer. But while Caster's friends and family may have trouble adjusting to the new him, Depp at least stays recognizable to fans. He's got the dark floppy hair, mustache and glasses for which he's well-known.
But Depp doesn't always look so straightforward. In 2013's "Lone Ranger," his Tonto wore a crumbly coat of white face makeup decorated with long black stripes — and in his most controversial choice, a black bird on his head.
Depp should've been used to the white makeup. He wore it in another movie, 2012's "Dark Shadows," in which he played 1960s-1970s soap opera vampire Barnabas Collins.
Like the chalky complexion? Here's more of it, as Depp portrayed the Mad Hatter in 2010's "Alice in Wonderland."
Depp also donned white face makeup for his starring role in "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." But his most memorable makeup job (other than Capt. Jack Sparrow's black eyeliner) might be the pale-skinned, scarred Edward Scissorhands, the star of the 1990 dark fantasy film that helped Depp break out of his "21 Jump Street" teen idol role.
Edward may have looked unusual, but Depp gave him the quirky and lovable charm that made the movie and character a classic. In the nearly-quarter-century since its release, songs, albums, and even an extinct scissor-clawed fossil have been named in honor of the character or star.
