David Cassidy, the '70s teen heartthrob and star of "The Partridge Family," was charged Wednesday with felony driving while intoxicated in Schodack, N.Y., the town's Police Chief Bernhard Peter told NBC News.

According to Chief Peter, officers were conducting a DWI checkpoint overnight when they stopped Cassidy's rental car around midnight for "failure to dim his oncoming headlights."

"When that happens, it's obvious the driver could be intoxicated," Peter said. "And, in this case, he certainly was."

Cassidy, 63, allegedly had a .10 percent blood alcohol content when he was arrested by town police Officer Tom Jones, Peter said.

The former actor was charged with felony DWI and failure to dim headlights, and was transported to Rensselaer County Jail where he posted $2,500 bail. Cassidy told police that he was passing through Schodack while on vacation with his fiancée, Peter said.

"He got off at the wrong exit," Peter said. "He was a gentleman the whole time. His fiancée was not intoxicated so we allowed her to take the vehicle."

Cassidy, who lives in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., was charged with a felony because of a 2011 conviction, Peter said.

Cassidy was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol in Nov. 2010 and charged with misdemeanor DUI, after a trooper observed his Mercedes weaving in traffic. Cassidy, who claimed to have had a glass of wine and a Hydrocodone pill earlier in the day, failed a field sobriety test and blew .139 and .141 on Breathalyzer tests, according to police.

He pleaded no contest in Feb. 2011 and was ordered to serve a year of probation and had his license suspended for six months. He also was ordered to attend a school for drunk drivers, fined $500 and ordered to serve 50 hours of community service.
