Updated at 8:50 a.m. ET: Dan Brown's new novel will be named "Inferno," a title first revealed Tuesday on TODAY with the help of thousands of viewers.

Fans across the world used their social media accounts to unlock a secret image on TODAY.com containing the name of Brown's next book. Through Facebook and tweeting the hashtag #DanBrownTODAY, viewers helped fill in a live mosaic that slowly revealed the book’s cover.

"Inferno" will be set in Italy and continues the adventures of symbologist Robert Langdon, publisher Doubleday said. It will be released on May 14.

“Although I studied Dante’s 'Inferno' as a student, it wasn’t until recently, while researching in Florence, that I came to appreciate the enduring influence of Dante’s work on the modern world,” Brown said in a statement. “With this new novel, I am excited to take readers on a journey deep into this mysterious realm…a landscape of codes, symbols, and more than a few secret passageways.”

Inferno follows Brown's three previous Langdon books, "Angels & Demons", "The Da Vinci Code" — which sold more than 81 million copies worldwide and ranks as the bestselling adult hardcover book of all time — and "The Lost Symbol."
