As you wish: See the 'Princess Bride' actors then and now

The film differed significantly from the William Golding novel that inspired it, but its lively cast of characters are what made it such a classic. Want to see what happened to those stars and their happily-ever-afters? Well, then ... as you wish.

Cary Elwes (Westley)
Dashing and delightful and complete with a gentle British accent, Elwes was everybody's Prince Charming, even if he started out as just a farm boy. The actor, now 51, went on to star in films like "Saw" and TV series like "Psych," and visits TODAY Oct. 10 to talk about his making-of-the-movie-memoir, "As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride." (He also did a Reddit AMA on Oct. 2.)

Robin Wright (Buttercup)
That hair! That dewy-eyed look of love and devotion for Westley! Swoon. Today, 48-year-old Wright — who went on to star in films like "Forrest Gump" and became tabloid fodder during her 14-year marriage to Sean Penn — is sleek and ruthless as first lady Claire Underwood in Netflix's "House of Cards."

Mandy Patinkin (Inigo Montoya)
Patinkin, 61, rocks at playing a man with an agenda. The multi-talented actor and singer went from the vengeful Inigo to former CIA acting director Saul Berenson on "Homeland," and in between appeared on shows like "Chicago Hope" and "Criminal Minds" along with stints on Broadway.

Fred Savage (The Grandson)
A pre-"Wonder Years" Savage, now 38, didn't even have a real name in the film, but his ability to be won over to the story as read by his grandpa (Peter Falk) was a charming B-plot that held all of the comedy and tragedy together. Savage still acts on shows like "Oswald" and "Generator X," but eagle-eyed TV viewers are more likely to see his credit flash by as a director on shows like "Garfunkel and Oates" and "2 Broke Girls."

Wallace Shawn (Vizzini)
The 70-year-old Shawn is remarkably well-preserved, considering he inhabited the role of a sneaky man who advised never to get into a land war in Asia nearly 30 years ago. The playwright, screenwriter and comic actor turns up all over the place, voicing Rex in the "Toy Story" film series and in "The Good Wife" as a recurring character, all while writing and starring in films like this year's "A Master Builder."

Chris Sarandon (Prince Humperdinck)
Boo! Hiss! Yet ... rawr. Sarandon (who was married to Susan Sarandon from 1967-79) was smokin', yet eternally icky as the scheming Humperdinck. The 72-year-old has since had a busy career guesting on various shows, including stints on "ER" and "Judging Amy."

Christopher Guest (Count Tyrone Rugen)
Hard to know whether Rugen's evil nature was fueled by his sixth finger or not, but as played by Guest, 66, he was an unforgettable bad, bad boy. Guest, meanwhile, has not only been Jamie Lee Curtis' husband for the past 30 years, he's a former "Saturday Night Live" player whose dry-witted scripts and appearances in movies like "Best in Show" and "Waiting for Guffman" have helped redefine the film comedy genre.

Bonus! Don't miss Billy Crystal (who played Miracle Max) talking about his time on the set in the audio book version of Elwes' memoir. (Elwes, Robin Wright, director Rob Reiner also both voice memories.) Crystal reveals the cast would stay in character even while on break for lunch, which makes us wonder if he ate a nice MLT — mutton, lettuce and tomato sandwich.
