We’re not the only ones loving Tamron Hall’s fabulous tresses! The September issue of Essence features an interview with the TODAY anchor and her longtime stylist, Johnny Wright, dishing on Hall’s look and the duo’s tight relationship.

Back in June, Essence took note after Tamron decided to sport her natural curly hair on television for the first time.

“I was too tired to do my hair that morning,” Tamron said at the time. Viewers’ support for the style encouraged her.

Video: In the latest issue of Essence magazine, Tamron Hall and Johnny Wright, who’s been her stylist for 18 years, discuss how they met, and how first lady Michelle Obama “stole” Johnny to do her hair.

Wright also stood behind the Hall’s natural look.

“Times have definitely changed,” Wright told TODAY. I do think women are starting to embrace their curls a little more.”

In the Essence article, Hall and Wright riff on how their rapport began 18 years ago, leading to Hall’s signature look and helping Wright reach new career heights, including styling first lady Michelle Obama’s locks.

Wright says in the piece he met Hall two weeks after first watching her on TV in Chicago,

Hall remembers Wright approaching her at an event and saying he dreamt he did her hair.

Though they playfully differ on the details, they agree Hall laid down the law before she sat down in Wright’s chair.

She says to Essence, “I told him, ‘You can do my hair, but if you mess it up, you will never do anybody else’s hair again.’”

Obviously, Hall liked Wrights results, because they have tried all kinds of styles together, from weaves to wigs to blond hair, Hall said.

“He's been incredible. There's a unique relationship between a woman and her hairstylist: It's intimate and we protect it. So when he started with the first lady, I was so proud of him, but I was a little jealous [laughs]. But he's doing so many amazing things now and that makes me very proud.”
