Happy 19th anniversary, TODAY plaza!

In keeping with tradition, Savannah and Matt handed out roses on Thursday morning to visitors on the plaza.

The custom started on June 20, 1994, when Bill Cosby handed flowers out to help open TODAY’s street-side studio. Bryant Gumbel and Katie Couric co-anchored that morning and, as Gumbel put it, “a new chapter in morning television” began.

In 2013 alone, the plaza played host to summer concerts, Olympic countdowns and races that put Matt, Savannah, Natalie, Al and Willie to the muddy test.
