It doesn’t get much cooler than having Prince compose the theme song for your show.
MSNBC's “NewsNation with Tamron Hall’’ has a new song created just for the show from the Purple One, who happens to be a big fan of Hall’s work on television when he’s not cooking up new guitar licks. During the "Take Three'' segment on TODAY Thursday, Hall talked with fellow anchors Willie Geist and Al Roker and E!'s Jason Kennedy about the thrill of having a song composed especially for her by "the coolest person on Earth."
“Prince is a news junkie,’’ Hall said. “He is incredible. He is the most thoughtful person. He is engaged with what’s going on in the world, and so it evolved into this amazing opportunity for me to have this song. It blew me away when I got the email. He’s the coolest person on earth.’’
The song’s title was originally “Seventeen,’’ but that has been changed to “The NewsNation Theme Song,’’ Hall said. She could barely contain herself while keeping the song under wraps for nearly a month before announcing it would be the instrumental theme introducing her show five days a week.
“I had the song for about three weeks,’’ she said. “His people sent the song to me, and I was so nervous. I didn’t want to reveal the song. I was grooving to the song by myself at home.’’
Prince has given Hall permission to use the song on the show for six months, and she hopes to play it a little longer.
“I’m sure I can get an extension from Prince, but I thank him very, very much,’’ she said. “He’s actually one of the most amazing individuals.’’
A snippet of the song was played on TODAY, prompting Al to joke, “Wait a minute. I’ve heard that before. That’s the theme from ‘The Cosby Show.’’’
“You are such a hater,’’ Hall said.
Al then quickly reversed course.
“You are the coolest person in the world,’’ he said. “When you get the coolest person to do a theme song for you, that makes you cool.’’
